Charles Duncan Michener

El entomólogo americano Charles Michener nació en Pasadena, California, el 22 de septiembre de 1918. Gran parte de su carrera se ha dedicado a la sistemática y a la historia natural de las abejas. Su primera publicación fue en 1934, a la edad de 16 años. Recibió su B.S. en 1939 y su Ph.D. en entomología en 1941, de la Universidad de California, Berkeley. Permaneció en California hasta 1942, cuando fue el curador auxiliar de Lepidoptera en el Museo Americano de Historia Natural en New York City. En 1944 publicó un sistema de clasificación para las abejas que pronto fue adoptado por todo el mundo, y fué funcional hasta 1993 y 1995, cuando fue autor de nuevas clasificaciones. A partir la 1943 a 1946, Michener también sirvió como un primer teniente y capitán en el cuerpo sanitario del ejército de Estados Unidos, donde investigó enfermedades trasmitidas por los insectos, y describió el ciclo vital del chigger común.

Michener armó la facultad de la Universidad de Kansas en 1948 como profesor de asociado de entomología. Era presidente del departamento de la entomología a partir de 1949 hasta 1961, repitiendo otra vez a partir la 1972 a 1975. Le concedieron una beca en la John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship en 1955, y nuevamente en 1966. A la hora de su retiro en 1989, Michener había publicado cerca de 340 artículos y libros, sobre todo en sistemática y biología de las abejas. En fecha 2006, el Dr. Michener sigue siendo activo y continúa publicando.
