Ellen S. Tupper, de Brighton, Iowa, logró reputación como escritora sobre apicultora. Ellen Tupper publica en 1874 un Journal de apicultura, Mrs. Tupper’s Journal, y enseña la apicultura en la universidad del estado de Iowa durante 32 años. Muchas mujeres se convierten en apicultores comerciales, especialmente en la reconstrucción del sur. Participó en la Association for the Advancement of Women, Mich Ladies Literary Club, defendiendo los derechos de la mujer.
